“This generation is going have some weird nostalgia” – XKCD

If you have an hour (or three, more likely), I highly suggest going back to the Wired archives to read Neal Stephenson’s 1996 (!) travelogue/investigative report/hackerlogue “Mother Earth Mother Board” about the laying of FLAG , the underwater cable that famously disrupted internet service in parts of Asia earlier this year. It also has the truest explanation of the Pyramids I have ever read:

“To the hacker, the most interesting thing about the Pyramids is their business plan, which is the simplest and most effective ever devised: (1) Put a rock on top of another rock. (2) Repeat (1) until gawkers arrive. (3) Separate them from their valuables by all conceivable means. “
